Sowelu New Works in Process is an in-depth program for developing writers and original productions. We provide selected writers with an extensive workshop process over a two-year period, with access to dramaturgical guidance; workshops with actors and directors; and fully realized productions of these new works.

The Collins Foundation, The Flintridge Foundation and The Allen Foundation for the Arts have supported this more in-depth development process for original plays by the Sowelu Ensemble. The Sowelu Ensemble is made up of a group of actors, directors and dramaturges that have been creating together in weekly workshops for the past nine years. Read MoreĀ»

The Ensemble has created a unique development process for poetic-minded playwrights whose plays will benefit from an ensemble possessing both strong acting and imaginative movement skills. This work has recently expanded to include filmmakers.

Past works that received full production include:

  • Brightest Thing in the Dark Tonight by Luke Heyerman
  • headless by Lea Floden
  • The Hero by Luke Heyerman
  • Curse of the Great Eleven by Lea Floden
  • Am I Turning Into A Fish by the Sowelu Ensemble
  • Numbnuts by Tom Mowe
