An Evening of Flamenco and Ballads

Juliet Cardinal

These three artists take us on an adventure into the heart of Spain’s flamenco tradition of dance and song. The evening features the poetry of Federico Garcia Lorca musically arranged by Paco Ibanez, one of Spain’s legendary balladeers.

Hear Joaquin Lopez and Stan Olmsted’s signature performance of Lorca’s epic poem, Romance Sonambulo. Juliet Cardinal showcases her cante flamenco as she performs songs of love and loss along side the beauty of the Flamenco guitar.

Read the Oregonian Review of this performance.

Juliet Cardinal moved to Portland to study flamenco dance with Laurena Marrone at the Flamenco Center for Flamenco Art. The more she learned about this amazing art form, she began to love the singing (cante) most of all. She studies this obscure and complicated music on her own and with the help of some great Flamenco musicians. She is now the singer for Laurena's dance studio and the Solo Flamenco Dance Company, as well as a collaborator in The Lorca Project and Flamenco Vivo.

Joaquin Lopez grew up around music all his life. Major influences are: his father, Salvador Lopez, a songwriter for many Mexican pop bands in the Portland area during the late 80s; participating in church choir with his family; and early old-school MTV. He received his formal training at Southern Oregon University in Ashland, OR and at the LA Music Academy. Joaquin and Stan are founders of the flamenco rumba group Jinete.

Stan Olmsted was raised in a musical family and Stan learned first from his father. His formal music training began at the age of 18 at the Jana Nerudy Music Academy in Prague, Czech Republic with classical guitarist Martin Sauer. He later continued his studies in Prague at the Czech National Conservatory under guitarist Vaclav Kucera. He discovered the flamenco guitar studying with local guitarist Dale Fine. He lived in Granada, Spain for two years and studied with many prestigious flamenco guitarists such as Emilio Maya, Carlos Heredia, Juan del Gastor and Antonio Heredia "El Chonico."
